Army Senior Reserve Officer Training Program (SROTC)Army Senior Reserve Officer Training Program (SROTC)Primarily, the Army Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (SROTC) program is a college scholarship program (although it is certainly possible to participate in the program without receiving a scholarship), leading to a commission in the United States Army. The overall mission of the Army SROTC Program is to produce commissioned officers in the quality, quantity, and academic disciplines necessary to meet Active Army and Reserve Component requirements. SROTC Organization The SROTC Program is conducted at three types of schools Civilian colleges- unterstellung are schools that grant baccalaureate or graduate degrees and are elend operated on a military basis.Military colleges -These are institutions that meet the following criteria (1) Grant baccalaureate degrees. (2) Require a course in military training during the undergraduate course for all undergraduate students who are phys ically fit (with a few exceptions)Military junior colleges (MJC) -These are military schools that provide high school and junior college education. These schools do elend grant baccalaureate degrees but meet all other requirements of military colleges. They administer both the Junior and Senior ROTC programs. SROTC Programs There are three types of SROTC programs A Host Battalion has a formal agreement between the Secretary of the Army (SA) and the academic institution. Host battalions are assigned a Professor of Military Science (PMS), staffed to instruct and recruit cadets and provide for their own administrative and logistical support. The PMS and staff are specially selected Army commissioned officers.An Extension Center has a formal agreement between the Commander of Army ROTC, and the university or college. Extension centers are assigned an assistant PMS or officer in charge and are staffed to instruct and recruit cadets. These centers receive their administrative and log istical support from their host ROTC Battalion. A cross-enrolled school has an agreement (formal or informal) with a host or extension center that allows for the transfer of academic leistungspunkt. Cadre (instructors and staff) are not assigned to cross-enrolled schools. All SROTC activities and functions at an institution are grouped under and organized into the Department of Military Science. In institutional matters, the designated administrative official has the same control over the Department of Military Science as with other departments in the school. At the discretion of the school authorities, the Department of Military Science may be grouped with the Department of Aerospace Studies and/or Department of Naval Science, if present, into a single large academic division. The Army SROTC program is a cooperative effort, contractually agreed to between the Army and host institution, to provide junior officer leadership training in the interest of national security. The Army coop erates with host schools to produce well-educated young men and women with leadership potential for civilian enterprise and national defense. The Army is willing to receive valid criticism, regardless of source, to maintain a working program. The right of orderly unigelnde dissent is recognized. However, the Army has limited tolerance for anti-ROTC activities that degrade and distort the Army. When a host institution does not support the ROTC Program, the Army will consider disestablishing the ROTC program at that institution. Army SROTC is currently offered mora than 800 colleges and universities. Types of SROTC Participants Its not necessary, in all cases, to commit to joining the Army to participate in ROTC. There are several types of ROTC students Scholarship Students The Army ROTC Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to those students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential. The U.S. Army Scholarship Programs purpose is to provide fo r the education and training of highly qualified and motivated young men and women who have a strong commitment to military tafelgeschirr as commissioned officers. The number of cadets in the scholarship program at any one time is limited by law (10 USC 2107). There are two, three, and four-year scholarships available. Scholarships are awarded at different monetary levels. At some schools, an ROTC scholarship is worth up to $80,000, which goes towards tuition and educational fees. Also, scholarship winners receive an allowance of up to $1,500 a year. ROTC scholarships are not based on financial need. Instead, theyre awarded on merit. Merit is exhibited in academic achievement and extracurricular activities, such as sports, student government or part-time work. If you are 17 years of age when you enroll, your parents or guardian must also sign this contract. If you are 18 or older, only your signature is required. This contract contains a requirement to repay the United States Govern ment for all financial aid received if after you begin your sophomore year, you fail to comply with the term of the contract. This repayment may be monetary or in the form of enlisted tafelgeschirr. The choice rests with the Army and not the scholarship cadet. Nonscholarship Students Even without a scholarship, students can sign an enlistment contract, enroll in ROTC, and (ultimately) obtain a commission. Nonscholarship students incur a service obligation to attend the advanced course, but not the basic course. Participating Students ROTC participating students are students who participate in military science courses but are not fully enrolled in ROTC. They are divided into three categories auditing students, conditional students, and alien students. Students who are ineligible or become ineligible for enrollment as a ROTC cadet mayif desired by school authorities and approved by the PMS, participate in the ROTC program as a participating student provided They are not authorized to access classified instructional material.They are in good standing and attending school full time.There is no loss in effectiveness of military instruction.Such participation is not otherwise prohibited by law, DOD Directive or Army Regulation. Auditing Students Any student may audit courses in the ROTC program if approved by the PMS and school authorities. This authority is granted to permit the PMS to cooperate with the school in accommodating a students request for limited participation in the program. Auditing students will not Participate in drill, marching, leadership laboratories, field training exercises, voluntary programs, or attend basic or advanced camp.Be issued or wear the uniform.Receive credit toward commissioning or enlisted grade status through an audit of ROTC courses, or issued a DA Form 134 for having audited the course. Conditional Students Conditional students are those who complete part I of DA Form 597 (Army Senior Reserve Officers Training Corps Nonscholars hip Cadet Contract) but do not complete the enlistment contract. Conditional students in this paragraph refer only to those described in (1) and (2) below. It does not include alien students, or students trying to decide whether they desire to join ROTC and later strive for a commission. Credit toward commissioning cannot be awarded to students who are not officially enrolled as cadets. The category of conditional students include Applicants for enrollment in the ROTC Program whose eligibility based on medical, academic, or other criteria has not been finally determined or for whom a waiver request is pending. Students enrolled before being placed in this category will not be disenrolled solely on the basis of a pending request for waiver.Students who are ineligible or become ineligible for enrollment but whose participation in all aspects of the year of instruction involved has been approved by the PMS or higher authority. Conditional status must be resolved within a 12-month peri od from its inception. Conditional students will not be furnished Government-issued uniforms. Uniforms for conditional students may be purchased by the school or the student. Conditional students may wear the Army green or utility uniform while pursuing a course for which regularly enrolled cadets are permitted to wear the uniform. Conditional students are not authorized to attend the basic camp or advanced camp until their conditional status is resolved. If directed by USAROTCCC, an individual may attend advanced camp for further evaluation of an unresolved medical condition by camp Medical Waiver Review Board (MWRB). Alien Students An alien student may voluntarily enroll in the basic course or attend basic camp and may participate in the advanced course. The army does not actively recruit nonimmigrant aliens for ROTC. Each alien applicant must meet the following requirements Possess proper papers establishing his or her status as an immigrant, refugee, or nonimmigrant alien.Be enr olled in and attending full-time a regular course of instruction at a school where SROTC is available.Be recommended by the proper school authority.Be recommended by the PMS.Meet the regular medical fitness requirements for enrollment in ROTC. Expenses incurred by an applicant because of these requirements are not reimbursable by the Government. Immigrant alien students are briefed, in advance that participation in the advanced course will not result in appointment as an officer. Should the student attain citizenship before graduating and be qualified in all other areas, he or she must elect to enroll in the advanced course or be released from the program. Alien students may be disenrolled from the basic course or dismissed from participation in the advanced course for any reason. Eligibility Requirements Academic position Students must be enrolled in and attendingfull-timeat a regular course of instruction at a school participating in theSROTCProgram. At military colleges and c ivilian schools, the course of instruction must lead to a baccalaureate or advanced degree in a recognized field that is compatible with the students participation in the ROTC Program. Nursing and other medical specialty students must be enrolled in a program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. There are no restrictions on the students major (except for scholarship cadets). Request for exceptions to the enrolled in and attending full-time requirements may be submitted by graduate students only, and are approved on a case-by-case basis. Age Requirements for scholarship applicants are shown below. For nonscholarship applicants Minimum Applicants must be at least 17 years old to enroll in the advanced course. Applicants under 18 years old and those who are minors for the purpose of executing contracts under the laws of the State which has jurisdiction where the school is located (even if older than 18) require parental consent for enrolling in the ad vanced course.MaximumApplicants must be young enough that they will not be 30 years old or older at the projected time of commissioning.WaiverThe Commanding General of ROTC is the waiver authority for those who will be over the age of 32 at the projected time of commissioning. Applicants must have demonstrated exceptional ability and be recommended by the region commander. Region commanders are authorized to approve waivers for applicants who will be between 30 and 32 years old at the projected time of commissioning. Character Applicants must be of good moral character, as normally substantiated by no record of disciplinary problems or civil convictions. Applicants who have beenconvicted of an offense, that would normally evidence a lack of good moral character when the conviction has not been waived are not eligible for enrollment. Citizenship Students must be citizens of the United States (except as provided above). Dependents Criteria for determining eligibilityThe applicant mus t have no more than three dependents. Region commander may grant a waiver for a married applicant requesting a waiver.An unmarried applicant who has one or more dependents under 18 years old is disqualified, except as provided in (3) below. No waiver is authorized.A divorced or sole parent applicant may be processed for enrollment without waiver when the child or children of such applicant have been placed in the custody of the other parent, or an adult relative or legal guardian by court order if the applicant is not required to provide child support. If the applicant is required to provide child support, a dependency waiver is required. The region commander has the authority to grant the waiver. In both cases, the applicant must sign a statement of understanding that he or she will be disenrolled if custody of the child or children is regained while the applicant is enrolled in ROTC. An exception to unenrollmentmay be granted only in extraordinary circumstances such as the death o f the legal guardian, or adult having custody of the child or children.An applicant with a spouse in a military component of any armed service (excluding members of the Individual Ready Reserve( IRR)) who has one or more dependents under 18 years old is disqualified. No waiver is authorized.Husband and wife teams who have one or more dependents under 18 years old are disqualified from enrollment in ROTC as a team. No waiver is authorized. Either the husband or wife may enroll without a waiver subject to other provisions of this paragraph. Change in status Once an applicant has enrolled in the ROTC Program, a change in the status or number of his or her dependents does not constitute cause for unenrollment, and does not require a waiver. However, if the number, status, or circumstances of a cadets dependents adversely affects the cadets performance of duty to the extent that the cadet fails to fulfill the terms of the ROTC contract he or she may be processed for unenrollment.Pregnant students Cadets who become pregnant during the course will not be involuntarily disenrolled solely because of pregnancy. Medical Qualifications SROTCstudents must bemedically qualifiedfor entry into the United States Armed Forces. English Language Aptitude All applicants must be proficient in the English language. Cadets whose primary language is not English will be given the English Comprehension Level Test (ECLT). Requirements for the Advanced Course and the Basic Camp In addition to the general requirements for enrollment, a student enrolled in the advanced course or for the basic camp must meet the following requirements Academic and ROTC Status Have an established cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better on a 4.0 system. Exception Entering freshman at a Military Junior College (MJC) and prior service enlistees who were participants in the Army College Fund Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) and are entering freshman as followsBe enrolled in and attending as a full-time student (according to the schools criteria) a recognized course of instruction producing a baccalaureate degree, advanced degree, or an advanced education program at a fully accredited 4-year degree granting institution or at a fully accredited associate degree-granting institution that has been recognized as having established formal linkage with a fully accredited 4-year degree granting institution. Have satisfactorily completed the ROTC basic course, or received credit on the basis of other previous military training or service, or satisfactorily completed basic camp.MJC freshman - 2.0 cumulative high school GPA and a scholastic aptitude test score of 850 or an American college test score of 17.Prior service - score of 110 or higher on the general technical aptitude area of the Army Classification Battery. Officer Potential The student must possess qualifications for becoming an effective Army officer. Leadership potential will be emphasized as an important factor in selection f or the advanced course. Applicants must possess officer-like qualifications as evidenced by their appearance, record, personality, scholarship, extracurricular activities, and aptitude for military training. Eligibility for Scholarships To be eligible to receive or retain an Army ROTC scholarship, the student must meet the following requirements Be a citizen of the United States.Enlist in the Army National Guard or United States Army Reserves (USAR) for a period of 8 years.Be at least 17 years old by 1 October of the year of enrollment as a scholarship cadet if enrolled in the fall. Other than fall enrollees must be at least 17 years old by the time of enrollment as a scholarship cadet. No waivers are authorized.Be under 27 years old by 30 June of the calendar year in which eligible for appointment. An extension may be granted to prior service applicants if the applicant will be under 30 years old by 30 June of the calendar year that he or she is eligible for appointment. The le ngth of extension may not exceed the actual period of active duty service. Be of good moral character as evidenced by home, community, and school activities.Exhibit a strong desire to obtain a commission and pursue a military career in the Army.Possess potential to become an effective Army officer. Leadership potential will be emphasized as a very important factor for selection and continuation of a scholarship. Applicants must possess officer potential as evidenced by -(a) Appearance. (b) Personality. (c) Academic excellence. (d) Extracurricular activities. (e) Physical fitness. Be medically qualified, under the standards ofArmy Regulation 40-501.Sign an agreement meeting the requirements of Title10 USC 2107, and2005.Execute the loyalty oath.Be eligible for aSecret Security Clearance. Although a Secret clearance is not a prerequisite to awarding a scholarship, students must obtain a Secret clearance within 180 days of the award in order to retain the scholarship status. Extensions not to exceed an additional 90 days may be granted by the region commander. Extensions in excess of 90 days must be approved by the Commanding General of ROTC. Scholarship cadets who receive a Letter of Intent to Deny Security Clearance from the Commander, U.S. Army Central Personnel Security Clearance Facility will be processed for termination of scholarship. Be enrolled in anapproved degree program. Scholarships are very competitive. Federal Law limits the number of scholarships that can be granted each year. The following items are used to select scholarship winners Results of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). You must achieve a minimum SAT score of 920 (composite of Verbal and Math) or an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 19 to qualify forcompetition. If you take both the SAT and ACT, you must submit the results of both tests - your best score will be used.High school academic standing - your class size and rank are required. You mus t have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher.Three school officials evaluations. These evaluations are to be completed by teachers, coaches, or the principal. If you are attending the United States Military Academy (USMA) Preparatory School, you must have one of these evaluations completed by a USMA Preparatory School Official. Extracurricular participation, athletic activities, and leadership positions held. If you have held part-time jobs during the school year and do not have the time for extensive participation in sports and extracurricular activities, you will be given credit based on the number of hours you worked per week. Personal interview. It is very important that you apply to the schools you list on your application. No waiver is required for minor traffic offenses resulting in a fine of$250 or less, except when the applicant has accumulated six or more such offenses during any 12 month period. Waivers are not required for disciplinary actions in connection with the provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), Article 15. Such disciplinary actions will be considered when evaluating the applicants character, however. In requesting a waiver, the student must list all the above proceedings, whether by military or civilian courts. The basic camp is designed for students who do not complete the basic course, in order to allow them to catch up, to enter the Advanced Course. Basic Camp ROTC Basic Camp is required for a ll applicants who have not completed or received credit for completing MS I and MS II. Air Force Snipers in IraqAir Force Snipers in IraqAs Staff Sgts. Larry Knoll and Ace Jones drove down the dirt road, the knobby tires of their all-terrain vehicles kicked up huge clouds of dust. Goggles, strapped over their Kevlar helmets, covered their eyes. They wore gloves and heavy flak vests, over which an assortment of gear hung from the belts of their load-bearing equipment. And they had stubby M-4s, the latest type of M-16 assault rifle, slung over their shoulders. The security forces airmen wore the tools of their trade. Friends and partners, they knew well how to handle their steel, plastic and rubber steeds on the bumpy road at Bashur Airfield, Iraq, an outpost 255 miles north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. They stopped near a row of tents, got off their vehicles and dusted themselves off. Around them, airmen sat on cots outside their canvas abodes, chatting and spooning down Meals, Ready to Eat. And after a long day on the job, the rations were looking mighty tasty to K noll and Jones. What a day. Weve been busy since we got up, said Knoll, who has been a security cop his whole 10-year Air Forcecareer. Its going to feel good to get off my feet for a while. But after 14 hours on the job, there was a chance they might not get any rest. At any moment they could get the call to switch to their other persona, snipers. Not the kind in Hollywood movies who sneak into the countryside to spend weeks stalking an enemy for that one shot, one kill moment. No. Knoll and Jones are quick to say theyre, first of all, security troops whose job is to protect their fellow airmen. Well do whatever it takes to keep our troops safe, said Knoll, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. At Bashur, the hub of the Air Force airlift into northern Iraq at the peak of rechengang Iraqi Freedom, that meant doing grunt work. Going on perimeter and off-base patrols, standing guard at entry control points and building defensive firing positions. Not a problem. Its exactly what the pair trained to do. What they expected when they joined the Air Force to be security troops. They love the lifestyle. Plus, when they volunteered for duty with the 86th Contingency Response Group, they knew that to really do their job theyd have to be at a bare base in the middle of a fight somewhere. Theyre in a unique unit, the only one in the Air Force. The groups job is to be the first to land at a bare base to establish airfield and aerial port einzelschritts, pronto. The 786th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, where Knoll and Jones work in operations, provides the security. The cops keep airmen safe as they land, unload and launch aircraft around the clock. A Sharp Eye Knoll and Jones never stopped scanning the surrounding mountains, an instinct theyd developed during sniper training. With a snipers sharp eye, they looked for an unseen enemy. A mobile and elusive foe who, if unstopped, could attack and kill squadron mates and cause havoc with flight operations. The sniper team hope d to put their training to the test. So, they kept their long-range rifles and Ghillie camouflage suits ready. In minutes, they could gather their gear and silently skulk off into the mountains in search of a target. But in the close-knit rural communities around the airfield, the Kurdish people knew their friends and neighbors well. New faces are easy to spot. So news of a stranger travels fast, easily reaching friendly intelligence operatives in the area. Itsthe intelligence people who give snipers their targets. But the local eyes and ears helped deter Iraqi troops and terrorists from sneaking in and taking shots at Bashur. But the war on terrorism isnt a precise operation. Terrorists are unpredictable and strike quickly, making attacks hard to stop, Jones said. And Bashurs key mission ensured it would be under constant threat as long as the war with Iraq continued. Well continue doing our regular jobs, said Jones, an 11-year vet from Wake Forrest, N.C. But weve got to be ready t o switch to sniper mode, to eliminate any threat before one of our people gets hurt. Knoll and Jones have been a team for more than two years. Theyve honed their craft through extensive training. They stay ready and can gather theirsniperskits and be on the prowl in minutes. They knew their main target would be a bad guy carrying a shoulder-fired missile. Itswhy they kept an eye on the mountains. Because just one rocket fired from any of the surrounding peaks at their tent city could cause massive injuries. And if a missile hit a cargo plane, it could stop all air operations into the strategic 7,000-foot runway. That wouldnt have been good, to say the least. Because during the height of the operation to liberate Iraq, more than 366 C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules transports dropped off more than 23 million pounds of cargo at the airfield. Most planes arrived at night, loaded to the gills with supplies and equipment. Airmen ran to unload them by the dim green light of their n ight vision goggles. The nearby mountains echoed with the noise of plane engines. And the group ran blacked out operations to add another layer of security to the Bashur night. Knoll and Jones knew they might have to do their job in the dark. No matter, they said. Day or night, our job is to take out a target before he can fire at one of our multimillion dollar aircraft or kill someone, Knoll said. So missing a shot isnt an option. Anything less than a confirmed hit does little to diminish the threat to the airmen on the ground. But if the exacting code of their work put extra pressure on the snipers, it didnt show on their faces. You just make sure you dont mess up, Knoll said. Trained to Snipe But mess up isnt in their vocabulary. They know their talents are in high demand. That the mere rumor theyre on the battlefield can send shivers through the enemy ranks. Snipers are the biggest psychological deterrent on the battlefield, Knoll said. Theyre also the most hated troops in a combat zone. So snipers must stay focused on the mission and what theyre doing to survive, he said. Wecantmake a mistake, he said. Too much is at stake. Besides, how many snipers have you heard of who have come back from a prisoner of war camp? Knoll and Jones accept the responsibilities of their joband the risks. They knew what they were getting into when they joined the contingency response group, with its headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Their squadron is at nearby Sembach Air Base. When they arrived, there were six snipers. But for the past two-and-a-half years, Knoll and Jones have been the only two. Their desks are across from each other, and they train together. Theyre pals off the job, too, so they know each other well. Both went through theArmy Sniper Schoolat Fort Benning, Ga., a month apart. They also went through the Air National Guard-runcountersniper schoolat Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Ark. But its the five-week course at the elite Army school that makes them valuable to the group. They learned advanced marksmanship skills, to measure wind effects and estimate the rangeoftargets. They also learned to detect, track and stalk targets, counter-stalking, andcamouflage. And they learned to select sites for, and set up, forward-listening and observation posts, also mastering how to stay undetected in them. That gives the contingency group commander an option on how to best use the snipers. The commander can keep them at the airfield to beef up force protection or provide countersniper fire - or send them to patrol nearby ridgelines. The long-range patrols, which can last a few days, are to find bad guys with the shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles. These weapons can threaten aircraft from as far away as six miles. We patrol well past the front lines, so we can take out a target well before it can threaten our aircraft or people, Knoll said. We have to keep a sharp eye open all the time. Once on the hunt, the longer the shot, the farther aw ay snipers arefromtrouble. So Knoll and Jones spend hours at the shooting range firing and mastering theirM-24 sniper rifles. Its a military modification of the Remington 700 hunting rifle. We practice as a team, so we know how each other works, Jones said. The teamwork paid off at the Army school, where snipers must fire from 400 to 600 rounds at targets ranging from 12-inches to 20-inches in height. They shoot from various distances and in different situations. Sometimes they knew the distance to the target and sometimes not. And they must hit moving targets during the day and at night. To pass each phase, snipers must hit 14 targets. Knoll and Jones did better. We hit 18 or 19 targets consistently, Jones said. We pride ourselvesonbeing good shots. Both have hit targets at more than 1,000 yards. But at Bashur, neither Knoll nor Jones took a shot. They continued to train and went on long patrols, but they didnt go on a real operation. They wished otherwise. They did have some excit ement though. Knoll and Jones, and 18 other group airmen, parachuted into Bashur with 1,000 paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade from Vicenza, Italy. The soldiers secured the perimeter while the airmen secured the runway and established air operations. It was a historic jump, and 14 of the Air Force jumpers were security forces. The airmen were the Air Forces first-ever conventional forces to parachute into a combat zone. And the huge C-17s that dropped them were on their first combat parachute mission. Wed just come home from a deployment and had four days to repack to stage for the jump into Bashur, Jones said. It was exciting, though we didnt know what threat to expect. Luckily, a real Iraqi threat never materialized. Still, Knoll and Jones cleaned their rifles and maintained their Ghillie suits, adorning them with bits of rags, strings, andlocal plants to blend in with the countryside. They worked around the clock, up to their necks in the security forces jobs theyd traine d to do. But they werent disappointed. When I found out I was jumping into Iraq, I was stoked, Jones said. I couldnt wait to get to Iraq and do my job. And thats just what I did. Knoll was confident he and Jones could take to the mountains to stalk an enemy. But when that didnt happen, they continued their force protection job. That was our main concern, anyway, Knoll said. But if they needed us as snipers,wereready to eliminate any threat that might pop up.

Content-wise, you should plow forward with your study plan- either course-based or self-driven- and implement the study tools that you know have been most effective for you in the past. But even sticking to a plan isnt always enough to curb bar exam stress. Below are five tips to help you stay calm and focused as you ready yourself for test day.Close Your LaptopI know- Im crazy. But if there is one thing that struck fear in me more than anything else bar-exam-related, it was technical issues on test day. You just never know what could happen, and in a world in which we do most of our communication through devices, that is a pretty scary prospect. But if you are prepared for the worst, then you wont need to waste your worries. Doing practice questions and taking practice tests are vital aspects of bar exam study. Make koranvers that you put your laptop aside and pull out some paper for some of these practice sessions. Get used to planning, organizing, and writing out your answers on paper within the time allotted. Its a lot different because you wont have the luxury of easily deleting and rearranging items. And if youre a fast typer, putting pen to paper may be an adjustment. Instead of stressing over problems, be ready for them.Understand the RulesDoes your state allow you to wear a watch? What kind of water bottle are you allowed to bring (New York, for example, requires the labels to be removed)? Should you bring pens or pencils or both, and what type (some states, like California, are specific about the types of pencils allowed)? If you think I sound ridiculous, think again. State bars have very specific rules about what you are allowe d to bring into the testing room, and some even specify the vessel in which you are allowed to bring permissible items (e.g., a plastic storage bag). Dont stay up the night before the bar panicking about what you need and what is allowed. During one of your study breaks, check out the website for any bar exams that you are taking, and read up on exactly what you are allowed to bring. Do it sooner than later so that you can better replicate your testing situation when you do practice exams. For example, if you are accustomed to using a watch to keep time during an exam or have a lucky hat that you were planning to wear, you should check if the guidelines allow those items.On the flipside, you should also be aware of supplies that you will be required to have with you on testing day (e.g. government-issued ID, exam ticket, pencils, etc.). It will only take you five minutes to read up on the what you can/cant bring and what you need, but itll save you late-night worry fests when you sh ould be resting.Pack A Bag in AdvanceOnce you have figured out everything you need and can bring, get your bag ready. And I dont mean the night before- Id do it days in advance. Pre-night jitters can be a killer, and the goal is to decrease your stress. You dont want the burden of remembering everything the night before or especially the morning of the test. Nail Down the LogisticsUnless you are the epitome of zen, you are probably going to be nervous on test day. The last thing you need is to worry about travel, start times, meals, and all of the other logistics of the day. Now is the time to plan out the details so that on test day, you can just walk into the room and take the test. Consider the following tipsPlan your travel If you live near your test site, map out multiple routes so that you are ready if there is traffic. If possible, ask a friend or relative to drive you so that you dont need to stress over parking and gas. If not, make aya you understand the parking options in advance, fill up your tank, and have the test center programmed into your GPS. Practice driving there so you know exactly where you are going. If you plan on taking public transportation, make sure you understand your options and alternatives you can use in case your chosen mode has an issue. If you dont live near the site and need a hotel, book it now.Know when you need to be there Regarding start time, make sure you know not only when the test begins but when you need to be there to check in.Dont forget about food As silly as this may seem, you should plan your lunch. When I took the bar, the testing site offered the option to order a boxed lunch in advance. It was the best decision I had made- not because the turkey sandwich was a culinary piece of art, but because I was a total test zombie who didnt want to talk to anyone I grabbed my box, hid in a corner, and ate. I didnt have to worry about scoping out food options in an unfamiliar area, getting back in time for the test, or having enough cash. You dont need to box it like I did, but have a plan for lunch, whether that means bringing one (and storing it somewhere as it likely will not be allowed in the test room), ordering in advance, or having a plan on where to go.Give Yourself a BreakIm sure people have been telling you to take time for yourself and not to study 24/7. Theyre right. But you should also be careful about your time off. If your friends and family arent also preparing for the bar exam, it can be hard for them to understand just how demanding and time consuming studying for it is. And that can make it difficult for you to resist their pressure to ditch studying and hang out. My best advice is to create a study schedule for your final weeks- if you dont already have one- that allots sufficient time for each subject as well as practice tests. And commit to your studies as you would a full-time job. But within that schedule, insert times for you to unwind- whatever that means for you- and sti ck to those breaks. For me, I reserved every Friday night to watch my favorite show, and no matter where I was in my studying, I dropped it, poured a glass of wine, and watched the show. It was such a small thing, but it helped me feel human and allowed me to recharge. I also slotted time for workouts throughout the week so that I wasnt glued to a library chair all of my waking hours. You should give the bar exam everything youve got, but that doesnt mean you cant have any time for you.
